How to Calculate the Slope of Your Site

Measuring the slope of your installation site takes no more than 10 minutes. To do that you will need a tent stake, a string, a line level, and a tape measure.

Follow these steps to accurately assess your site’s slope:

  1. Stake the High Point: Push in a tent stake at the highest point of the spot you want to put your shed.
  2. Attach the string: Tie a loop on the end of your string and attach it to the tent stake.
  3. Determine the lowest point: Walk to the lowest point within the perimeter of your site. Attach the line level to the string.
  4. Measure: Pull out the tape measure and lock it, placing the end on the ground. Pull the string tight measure and where the string intersects with the tape measure when the bubble is in the middle.

Read the measurement where you string is. This is now the highest your structure will be when leveled. Don’t forget that this is the bottom of your floor. In most cases you can add 9 inches to know where the top of your floor will be.
